The rite of sharing tea – in almost every culture it is linked to a feeling of welcoming, connection and coming to rest, no matter if we look to the Far-East, the Arabic world or Western Europe. And although in Western context the awareness for daily rituals seems faded, their power is still present. Hidden in daily life conventions they allow a moment of slowed time.
Making and drinking tea is such a ritual, done by almost everyone, often triggering that very special atmosphere of warmth and peace. In contrast to that warmth, tea-rituals are also connected to rules and procedures, in some cultures institutionalized in ceremonies with strict etiquettes. Between that two poles Theresa Unger and Marieke Breyne (both part of the Austrian-Belgian theater company “motschnik – Verein für feine Kunst”) are trying to find their own etiquette of a tea-ritual, serious and absurd, using known images and finding new ones and thereby moving on the fine line between choreography and ceremony, theater and ritual.

REVIEW

Er zat veel volk in de kleine Studio 2. Misschien zelfs te veel om echt van dit intimistische tafereel ten volle te kunnen genieten. Twee meisjes maken thee, maar niet zoals we het kennen. Het begint allemaal redelijk rustig wanneer ze hun handen wassen, maar de eerste absurde weerhaken zijn al in de kiem aanwezig. Met chirurgische precisie doorlopen ze vervolgens stap na stap van hun ritueel, dat tegelijkertijd vertrouwd en vervreemd aanvoelt. Daardoor behoudt de sfeer in de ruimte een zekere sereniteit, maar met ruimte voor humor. Af en toe werd de stilte dan ook doorbroken  door een welkome lach, waardoor het geheel toch niet te zwaar op de hand werd. Het hele ritueel uit de doeken doen zou zonde zijn, daarvoor moet u het zelf maar meemaken. Je inspanning zal beloond worden, met een grote slok thee.
